The Aquarium (cover, lid) Hood is essential for providing a purposeful lighted environment in the aquarium that most resemble that found in a natural habitat.  It should be tight fitting and act as a secure lid on the aquarium.  It can help prevent the loss of moisture about evaporation and of heat, keep out dust and other pets plus, the precious hands of children.  The underside of the hood should have a reflective surface that reflects light into the aquarium.  Aluminum foil may replicate this or, the underside can be painted white with waterproof and non-lead paint.  A protective glass cover plate of the lights protects them from splases and condensation and must be cleaned on a weekly basis.  When allowed to remain dirty, it will cut down dramatically on the effectiveness and intensity of light needed in the aquariumCut outs are needed on the back of the hood for passage of the airlines for airstones or air activated ornamentsThere should be an area for placement of an out of aquarium heater to hangHinges should be on the front part of the hood for easy access into the aquarium to facilitate feedings, trimming of water plants, catching or adding fish pets and, removing of debris.

They typically already have a protective glass plate between the hood to help avoid water splashes from aquarium activities. Tungsten type bulbs run too, hot and tend to overheat the aquarium to very dangerous levels sometimes.  The light they emit does not match the light spectrum needed by most water plants for growth to flourish.  They tend to cast a yellowish hue into the aquarium.
 
Metal Halide bulb lights are more powerful and put out a most suited intensity of light than fluorescent tubes.  Offering a lot of ultraviolet light, a filter should be highly considered,
 
Actinic light tubes emit a violet  to blue light that stimulates the sturdiness in water plants.  The algae found within the coral and anemones species need this spectra in order to promote photosynthesis which will be explained next.  Great for the deep aquariums where more light with their wide spectrum of wavelengths type penetration be needed.
 
Mercury vapor lights are cheaper to run than fluorescent tubes however, initial cost and that they run hotter may be reconsidered.  Deeper aquariums suggestively, with twenty or more inch depth.  They have an intense penetrating light with a wide range of spectra in colors or wavelengths.  Long lived, Mercury Vapor Lights offer about two years and still emit 80% effectiveness.      
 
Photosynthesis is a biological process that water plants utilize for growth and takes up light with CO2 being produced that offers the pet fish to generate sugars which get used by the plant species in order to thrive and in turn, giving off oxygen used by the pet fish.  Using carbon dioxide and nitrates in the water as food that water plants convert into both, sugars and protien which enhances growth healthy conditions.  Indeed, lights provide the energy for such main process to occur.  During photosynthesis, oxygen is released by the plant species which the fish breathe, giving off carbon dioxide which then, gets utilized by the amazing water plants again.
