Selecting an Aquarium Tank Heater
Thermostatic heaters are the most reliable means of heating an aquarium. Available in various lengths for aquariums of different power (expressed in wattage) ratings. Allow about 100 watts for every 25 gallons of water. Tropical fish do not tolerate rapid changes in water temperature. The heating unit should not be too powerful.
A thermostatic heater is used to heat a freshwater aquarium to 73-80 degrees F. A thermostatic heater is a special waterproof system with a heating element that works in conjunction with a thermostat. The thermostat measures the water temperature and heats the water when it is too cool (closed) and switches off (open) when it reaches the desired temperature. Thermostatic heaters keep the water temperature constant by switching on and off repeatedly. Because of this, they have a relatively short life span and should be replaced about every two years. The most efficient heaters are those that can be fully immersed in water.
High capacity tanks may need two or three heaters to maintain a consistent and even temperature throughout the aquarium. In a smaller tank, two heaters ma be used in case one fails, the other will provide the necessary heat.
Some heaters come with dual thermostats. This is a good feature because if the thermostat sticks closed (or on heating) the heater can overheat and cook the fish. A secondary thermostat is a good idea to prevent this. Naturally it’s necessary to check the temperature of the tank several times a day to catch any problems with the heater before it’s too late.
Fish tank heaters should be handled carefully to prevent any cracks in the heater housing tube. Cracks could allow water to leak into the heater and pose an electrification danger to both, the fish and their owners. It is recommended that the heaters be plugged into a ground fault circuit.
